ABOUT PERSPECTIVE FILMS
-
Perspective Fund is a philanthropic organization advancing storytelling, journalism, and cultural work that drives social change. In the last decade, it has supported more than 150 films, 50 organizations, and directed over $40 million into documentary storytelling and related initiatives, including Patrice: The Film, Through the Night, No Other Land, and Heightened Scrutiny.
Perspective Films is a new initiative of Perspective Fund. Where Perspective Fund's Documentary Film Support provides philanthropic grants, Perspective Films combines co-production grant funding with hands-on executive producing across the full arc of a film's development, production, distribution, and impact. The two share a submission pipeline but operate independently.
Projects are generally considered for one program or the other, not both. Occasionally, a project that has received early-stage Documentary Film Support may later be invited to participate in Perspective Films.
-
Perspective Films is an invitation-only opportunity. The primary pathways for identifying projects are the Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support Letter of Inquiry (LOI), which is open to all filmmakers, and ongoing curatorial research, industry relationships, and field partnerships.
Submitting a completed LOI means your project will be reviewed for alignment with Perspective Films. However, it does not guarantee an invitation or an offer of support.
-
Perspective Films onboards approximately four new projects per year. Because documentary films typically take three to five years to complete, our active slate will grow over time to include projects at various stages of development, production, distribution, and impact.
-
Perspective Films is funded through a separate allocation and does not affect Perspective Fund's existing grantmaking programs. Perspective Fund's Documentary Film Support, organizational funding, and broader infrastructure will remain steady. Perspective Films represents an infusion of additional support for impact documentary — not a reallocation of existing resources.
ELIGIBILITY + FIT
-
We support feature-length and short-form documentary films. Projects typically engage complex social, cultural, or political issues with nuance and depth, and demonstrate strong cinematic vision alongside thoughtful consideration of audience and impact. We support projects of all styles, including observational, character-driven, investigative, essayistic, and hybrid approaches, as well as personal films, provided they connect to broader cultural or social questions. For a full picture of what we look for, see our Eligibility and Selection Criteria.
-
Perspective Films does not focus on a specific issue area. We support projects across a range of social, cultural, and political topics. What matters most is the strength of the storytelling, the clarity of the film's intended audiences, and the potential to expand public understanding, shape culture, or drive systems change.
-
We prioritize projects in advanced development or early-to-mid production. Projects at later stages may be considered when our partnership can still meaningfully strengthen the film's trajectory in terms of storytelling, distribution, or engagement outcomes. The earlier we engage, the more we can contribute; our model is designed for sustained partnership, not late-stage intervention.
-
Our model is built around sustained creative and strategic partnership across the full arc of a film's lifecycle. A producer with meaningful decision-making authority is essential to that partnership as the operational and strategic backbone of a production. Without a producer in place, we cannot engage at the depth our model requires.
That said, strong director-led projects without a producer attached may still be considered in limited circumstances, particularly when the director is open to support in identifying a producing partner.
-
We support projects that show thoughtful consideration of audience, influence, and engagement pathways. Impact strategies can take many forms and should be calibrated to each project and the communities it aims to engage.
This does not necessarily require a formal impact campaign. It means the team has a clear sense of who the film is for, why reaching them matters, and how the film is positioned to move them. We are interested in films that understand their potential contribution within a broader landscape of work already in motion, and are open to working closely with movement partners, key thinkers in an issue area, and directly affected communities to maximize that contribution.
-
Yes. We consider projects regardless of country of origin and evaluate them based on storytelling strength, strategic alignment, and feasibility. A film's story and its intended audiences don't need to share the same geography; we are interested in projects that understand where their impact can be felt and why.
-
Yes. Filmmakers may submit more than one project through the Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support LOI process, which serves as the primary entry point for Perspective Films consideration. Each project is reviewed independently on its own merits.
That said, Perspective Films is an invitation-only opportunity with a highly selective review process. We encourage filmmakers to prioritize projects that are genuinely ready for submission, with a clear creative vision, a credible production path, and a team in place, rather than submitting multiple projects speculatively.
SUBMISSION + SELECTION PROCESS
-
Letters of Inquiry are reviewed by Perspective Fund on a rolling basis. Filmmakers who submit a completed LOI will typically receive a response within six months: either a declination or an invitation to submit a full application through the Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support pipeline.
Full applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. From the pool of full applications, a small number of projects are recommended for consideration. Filmmakers whose projects are being considered for Perspective Films will be invited to an exploratory conversation to assess mutual fit, including the strength of the creative vision, the team's readiness for collaborative executive producing partnership, and whether the depth of engagement Perspective Films offers is the right model for the project at its current stage. Projects not selected for Perspective Films may still be considered for a Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support grant.
If declined at any stage, filmmakers may be encouraged to resubmit in a future cycle. A declination is not a permanent no.
-
Yes. Perspective Films offers two types of orientation sessions.
Public orientation sessions are held periodically and open to any filmmaker interested in learning more about Perspective Films, the LOI process, and what we look for in projects we support. Our first public orientation is planned for Fall 2026. These sessions are not a prerequisite for submitting an LOI.
Onboarding sessions are offered to film teams in the contracting stage. These sessions are designed to walk teams through the process, systems, logistics, and materials delivery required as they formalize their partnership with Perspective Films.
Details on upcoming sessions will be announced on our Instagram and through the Perspective Films newsletter.
-
Yes, in limited circumstances. A project that has received early-stage Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support may later be invited to participate in Perspective Films. Projects are considered for one program or the other going forward; a current Perspective Films project will not be considered for additional Perspective Fund Documentary Film Support grants.
-
Because we review many projects across the nonfiction field, submissions may explore themes, subjects, or storytelling approaches similar to work already under consideration. We assess each project on its own merits and do not disqualify projects based on thematic overlap. That said, portfolio balance across subject matter, filmmaker career stage, format, and geographic representation is one of many factors we consider in final selection decisions.
-
We encourage filmmakers to review our Eligibility and Selection Criteria and this FAQ in depth before reaching out, as many common questions are addressed there.
Filmmakers with additional questions may contact hello@perspectivefund.org regarding eligibility, submission format, or general alignment. However, because of the volume of inquiries we receive, our team is not able to offer individual project consultations outside of formal invitation processes.
PARTNERSHIP + FUNDING
-
Our executive producing partnerships are tailored to the needs and opportunities of each project. We act as a thought partner and strategic collaborator rather than participating in day-to-day production management.
Partnership may include:
Creative and story development consultation
Financing and co-production strategy
Distribution and release positioning
Narrative strategy and audience engagement planning
Press and communications alignment
Impact campaign design and implementation planning
Introductions to philanthropic, distribution, advocacy, and field partners
Strategic guidance navigating cross-sector partnerships and stakeholder engagement
In practice, this partnership typically involves regular meetings with the filmmakers (directors and producers), ongoing feedback on key decisions, and targeted support actions that the Executive Producer can take on behalf of the project.
-
We collaborate through sustained consultation, mentorship, and strategic support across development, production, distribution, and impact. We work closely with teams toward each project milestone and associated funding disbursement to help maintain alignment and strengthen the film’s trajectory.
Filmmaking teams remain responsible for production execution, staffing, financial management, and operational decisions. We participate as an executive producing partner and do not hold final creative or editorial approval.
Partnership with Perspective Films does not include:
Perspective Films’ ownership or equity in the film
Creative or editorial control
Day-to-day production management or operational oversight
Responsibility for staffing, budgeting, or production logistics
-
We approach each partnership as a close, collaborative relationship that adapts as the film evolves. Different stages often require different kinds of support. Teams can expect thoughtful consultation throughout the life of the project. Some periods may involve deeper collaboration around creative direction, financing, distribution, or engagement planning. Partnership is not limited to funding moments; it typically includes ongoing dialogue, planning sessions, and milestone reviews so that support evolves with the film’s needs.
Our goal is to strengthen the film’s trajectory while ensuring filmmakers retain full leadership over execution.
-
Perspective Films provides grant funding of up to $375,000 per project. Funding is disbursed directly to the production across project milestones aligned with mutually agreed-upon deliverables.
-
Milestones are determined collaboratively as part of the grant agreement process and are aligned with key creative, production, and strategic deliverables. Because we work in close coordination with filmmaking teams, milestone shifts are typically identified and discussed together well in advance. Filmmakers are responsible for flagging unforeseen obstacles, opportunities, or timeline changes as early as possible so we can plan accordingly. Our goal is to stay closely aligned throughout.
-
Yes. Perspective Films funding is designed to complement other financing sources. Supported projects may work with philanthropic funders, broadcasters, distributors, co-production partners, and equity investors.
STRUCTURE, LEGAL + CREDITS
-
Perspective Films does not provide production services or serve as a production company of record. Filmmaking teams remain responsible for production management, employment structures, and fiscal administration. Perspective Films may provide guidance or referrals when helpful.
-
Perspective Films grant funding must flow through the program’s fiscal sponsor, The Film Collaborative, unless the production entity is a registered 501(c)(3). The fiscal sponsorship of Perspective Films’ grants by The Film Collaborative is a non-exclusive relationship, so filmmakers may maintain existing fiscal sponsorships for any other funding they bring in.
-
Our grants include a unique recoupment structure designed to support long-term public engagement work connected to the film. If a supported film generates a certain threshold of revenue, recoupment up to the amount of the grant will be directed back to the filmmaking team for use toward the film’s continued engagement, public strategy, or audience impact work.
In other words, any recouped funds are reinvested in the film’s reach and public life, not returned to Perspective Films. Terms are outlined in formal grant agreements.
-
No. We do not take ownership, equity, or a financial stake in supported films. Filmmakers retain full ownership of their work.
-
No. Filmmakers - directors and producers - retain full creative and editorial independence. We prioritize projects in which the filmmaking team, rather than an external entity such as a funder, broadcaster, or production partner, holds primary creative authority. We offer meaningful, strategic input and dialogue as a collaborative partner, but final creative decisions always remain with the filmmaking team.
-
Credit expectations are discussed collaboratively as part of partnership agreements. This typically includes “A Perspective Films Co-Production” credit. Supported projects also include Executive Producer credits for Jess Devaney, Jacob Taylor, and Andrew Catauro.
